Case in point: "Mickey's Philharmagic," the new 3D movie that's about to begin test screening at WDW's Fantasyland Theater. Back in January, there was nothing but bad buzz about this CG flick. Veteran Disney animators were grumbling about how awful this short film looked during its unfinished wire-frame phase. How it looked like Disney Feature Animation has another yet disaster on its hands.
The only problem with this story was ... well ... people were talking about "Mickey's Philharmagic" in its rough unfinished form. When -- of course -- a movie like this (even to the eye of an animation professional) can still look pretty lousy. Now several months of additional work have been done on the project and ... you know what, folks? "Mickey's Philharmagic" is actually looking pretty darned good nowadays. People who have recently seen this 3D movie aren't saying things like "That's a fairly good looking CG version of Donald." But -- rather -- "That's a great looking Donald Duck."
"Mickey's Philharmagic" -- as it turns out -- is going to be an extremely entertaining tribute to Disney's second Golden Age of Animation. Where memorable musical moments from great contemporary Disney animated films like "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin" and "The Lion King" will be recreated in CG form .... only with Donald Duck continually interrupting the action.
And if the current buzz on this WDI / WDFA collaboration turns out to be true, there's a very strong possibility that "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience" may get pulled out of Disneyland in late 2004 to make room for an Anaheim version of "Mickey's Phiharmagic." Which could begin entertaining Disneyland guests as early as the Spring of 2005. Just in time for the official kick-off of that theme park's 50th anniversary celebration.
